How to make a spacebar counter

spacebar counters are a surprisingly effective way to boost productivity when typing on a standard computer keyboard. If you're looking to become a more efficient typist, having a spacebar counter can help you track your typing speed and accuracy over time. Here's how to make your own spacebar counter:

1. Start by purchasing a laser pointer and a few pieces of sticky paper or small adhesive dots. You'll need the laser pointer to measure the distance that your fingers have travelled across the keyboard with each keystroke, and the sticky paper or dots will help you mark the various spots where your fingers travel regularly.

2. Place two pieces of sticky paper in parallel directly on top of your spacebar, one at each end - these will be your start and end points for measuring distance. Measure the distance between them and make sure it's an even number; if necessary, trim down the excess with scissors.

3. Now it's time to measure how far you're travelling across the keyboard keys with each stroke. Use your laser pointer to measure from one piece of sticky paper on top of your space bar to any other key on the keyboard, making sure all strokes are made with full force, as if you were typing regularly. Record this number down along with which finger it was made with (such as index, middle or ring finger).

4. Repeat this process until all 8 keys have been measured and recorded (including the spacebar itself). Add up all 8 distances together for a total measurement and calculate your average stroke rate (in centimeters per stroke). This is now your starting baseline measurement for tracking progress over time!

5. To track progress over time, repeat steps 1-4 once every one or two weeks - this will give you an accurate look at which areas need improvement so that you can focus on them in practice sessions thereafter!
